This yoga lark is obviously turning me into a bit of a hippie. Well I do have shoulder length hair so I guess I’m part way there.
My yoga teacher invited me along to a Gong Bath this evening and I went along to see what it’s all about.
Now, right off the bat, I should inform you that I probably wasn’t in the best frame of mind for it today. I spent the whole day with a bastard of a headache and it never left me. I did consider making my excuses and not gone. But I’m glad I stuck with it.
So what is a Gong Bath? I said Gong Bath. Not Dong Bath. That’s something completely different, but I’m sure the ladies there would have found that just as entertaining.
A Gong Bath is a form of cleansing relaxation. You get yourself nice and comfortable and the yogi gently bangs away until the intensity of the sounds increases exponentially.
When I first heard about it, I just thought to myself that it was going to be the students laying down while the master wanders around banging a tea tray. It’s not that. There’s a lot more to it than that, and I was pleasantly surprised with the experience.
Now did I mention the headache? It’s a doozy. I still have it now as I write.
I’d read –and heard, that some people get visions, emotionally charged, or even distressed when exposed to these intense sound waves. I guess each experience is different too. It certainly was for one person I spoke to afterwards.
Sadly, I didn’t feel any emotional feelings of well-being. Or of dread for that matter. I did, however, for a few fleeting moments, see a shoal of fish.
Let me explain. One of the ways that a Gong Bath works is that it taps into the same mechanism that allows hypnosis to work. Only this technique has been around much, much longer. The brain switches into a different mode and starts to run free. Like a day dream.
Once I finally allowed myself to stop trying to analyse what was going on, I did find myself picturing things in my mind. As a writer I found this of interest… then the image left me. But it did bring with it a strange sensation of itching all over, and for the briefest of seconds, I did get a sense of the lights being switched on in the room. At which point I think I fell asleep. That in itself is perfectly normal.
At the end we sat in a circle and drank spicy chai tea (one of my favourites. How did Sabina know ❤️), and discussed our experiences.
To my surprise, I was not the only one to get a sense of itching. I was the only one to see fish. Thank fuck it wasn’t spiders.
Did I enjoy it? Very much so. I do feel relaxed. Despite the headache –and I probably will go again. Hopefully not when I’m feeling crap.
